Stephen King, 21 Eylül 1947'de Donald ve Nelly çiftinin ikinci çocuğu olarak Portland, Amerika (http://www.biyografi.info/bilgi/amerika)'da dünyaya geldi. Henüz daha çocuk yaştayken annesi ile babasının boşanmasıyla sarsıldı. Annesi tarafından büyütülen Stephen, çocukluğunun bir kısmını Hindistan (http://www.biyografi.info/bilgi/hindistan)'da geçirdi. 1966'da Lizbon Lisesi'nden mezun oldu. Main Üniversitesinde öğrenciyken okul gazetesi için yazılar yazdı. 1970 yılında üniversiteden mezun oldu ve lise düzeyi okullarda ilgilizce öğretme yetkisi kazandı. Görev açığı olmadığından, mezun olduğunda öğretmenliğe atanamayan King, bir erkek dergisine kısa hikayeler yazarak para kazanmayı denedi.
1971'de,okul kütüphanesinde tanıştığı Tabitha ile evlendi. Aynı yıl Hampden Akademisinde İngilizce öğretmenliğine başladı.
Editörü, King'den öğretmenliği bırakıp, artık sadece yazmasını istedi. Annesinin rahatsızlığının ilerlemesi üzerine, 1973'te ailesini alıp Main'e döndü.
Burda kış için yazlık bir ev kiraladı. Bir sonraki romanı "Salem's Shot"u bu evin garajında yazdı. 1974'te ilk romanı "Carrie"i yayımlandı. King, bu donemde annesini kaybetti. Anne King, 59 yaşında kanser (http://www.biyografi.info/bilgi/kanser)den ötürü hayatını kaybetmişti.
Stephen King, annesinin ölümü üzerine Main'den Colorado'ya taşındı. Colorado'da bir yıla yakın kaldı ve ünlü eserlerinden "Shining"i burada yazdı. Ardından Main'e geri donen King ailesi, göller bölgesinde bir ev satın aldı.
